Leaf-green-36Eat Local

Local events, recipes and other goodies

I am a huge advocate of supporting local farmers
and local businesses.

There is something about going to the Farmer’s Market and talking with the people who live within a 30 mile radius of my house. It deepens my appreciation of my food and the people who work to grow it for me. Santa Cruz and the surrounding Bay Area is rich with options for local sustainable food. The meal you put on your table at night is interconnected, part of a greater web.

That’s what living a “holistic” life is all about..

Why eat locally grown foods?

  1. Eliminates your exposure to chemicals from pesticides, herbicides, growth hormones and antibiotics. These toxins diminish personal health and contribute to weight gain.
  2. Reduces environmental impact from shipping food thousands of miles
  3. Your dollar goes straight to the farmer!
  4. Eating foods at the peak of their season provides optimal nutritional value.
  5. Build community and educate yourself. Ask farmers questions and learn more about how your food was grown and raised.
  6. SOUL foods, Seasonal, Organic, Unadulterated and Local (SOUL) are the highest quality whole foods.
  7. Fresh food really does taste better!
“One of the greatest opportunities to live our values or betray them—
lies in the foods we put on our plates.”
Jonathan Safran Foer

Community Supported Agriculture

CSA or Community Supported Agriculture is a popular way to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. In addition to the guarantee of local organic produce the advantages include exposure to new seasonal foods and new ways to prepare them, eating super fresh foods packed with flavor and high in nutrients, developing a relationship with your farmers and getting to take a trip to your farm every year.

CSA’s also benefit the farmers; your dollar goes straight to them and they get to meet the people they are growing food for-you!
